PENNANTS TITLE THE SILVER LINING ON WET WEEKEND IN JUNE

After 92 long-years, the Waverley Bowling Club have returned to the top of NSW Pennants after winning a thrilling final on Sunday 30 June.

Across the final weekend in June, the Waverley Bowling Club competed for 3 days in the NSW Bowls 2023/24 Open Pennant Championship, battling against over 1,000 sides from 500 clubs across all 7 Grades.

The Waverley Grade 3 Pennants team were unbeaten in 9 seasonal sectional games and won the Zone 13 final to qualify for the last 16, played at the four green Forster Bowling Club. Defeating favourites St John’s Park and Harbord, and drawing with Parkes, saw the team progress to the quarter finals and semi-finals where they were too strong for Bateau Bay and Northmead respectively.

Starting the final dominantly, Waverley had the upper hand before heavy rain halted play and opponents, Campbelltown, came out firing after the break with 25 unanswered points. A final push in the last 3 ends saw Waverley rally, before skipper Terry Pappas, under enormous pressure, iced the game.

The last NSW Pennants title for Waverley was Grade 1 in 1932.
